Podcast - Amber tick and flea repellant

WSB-TV Consumer Investigator Jim Strickland has obtained records showing dog owners believe the drug is connected to hundreds of pet deaths. The medication is called Bravecto. It's a dog chew so powerful that one dose can kill fleas and ticks for three months.

Pills or chews that protect dogs and cats against fleas can cause neurological problems such as stumbling or seizures, allergy reactions and death.

Spot on symptoms of poisoning include poor appetite, depression, trembling, seizures, vomiting, diarrhea, or excessive salivation. It can also cause skin irritation, rash, redness. If your pet experiences a bad reaction from a spot-on product, immediately bathe the pet with mild soap, rinse with large amounts of water, and call your veterinarian.

Dogs and cats not treated with flea and tick medication, either in the form of a topical treatment or a flea and tick pill, can suffer everything from flea allergy dermatitis (which causes your animal to bite and scratch himself and sometimes lose his hair) to tapeworms.

Since a single female flea can produce up to 2,000 eggs in her three-week lifespan, a dog can become infested quickly. Tick bites are even more dangerous. A single tick bite can transmit Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, tularemia, ehrlichiosis and other diseases. Signs and symptoms of tick-borne illnesses may take anywhere from 7 to 21 or more days to appear.

fleas reproduce so quickly, by the time you notice them on your dog they could have produced two or three generations of offspring.

natural remedies to kill ticks

Salt: Regular table salt can kill tick larvae and eggs, dehydrating them until they fall apart. You can kill ticks in your house by sprinkling salt over your floor and furniture, applying a layer at night and then vacuuming it in the morning. If you have carpeted floors, leave a thick layer of salt on it for at least a week before vacuuming.

Boric acid (Borax): Boric acid is available in supermarkets as the main ingredient in some flea powder products. It can be sprinkled on your carpets. Boric acid alone can only kill larvae (living in carpets or rugs) that are actively feeding and not adult ticks because they only feed on blood.

Rubbing alcohol is a flea killer that kills fleas on contact. Never use rubbing alcohol to kill fleas on your pet dog and cat. Rubbing alcohol causes vomiting, disorientation, respiratory disorders, and seizures if pets consume it. And when you spray rubbing alcohol to kill in your home, ensure that your pets don’t come in contact with it at least for 24 hours.

Detergent: You can kill ticks on your pet with any sort of dishwashing liquid. Apply a generous amount of soap on your pet (more than you would for a typical bath). Allow your pet to soak in the soap for 15-30 minutes. Rinse thoroughly and let your pet dry indoors. Keep in mind that this may irritate your pet’s skin and will not kill tick larvae or eggs.

Natural oils like Eucalyptus, cedarwood, mint, vinegar, clove oil, citrus, lemongrass and rosemary: Eucalyptus oil acts as a tick killer as well as tick repellent. Spray a solution of 4 ounces of pure or distilled water with 20 drops of eucalyptus oil on yourself and your pet.

Black walnut is a very effective flea repellent for dogs when given orally several times a week. It can be purchased in capsules or in liquid form. Give only the minimum effective dose because it can be toxic in higher doses.

Baltic Amber - How does it work?

Baltic Amber is a natural tick and flea repellent which works in 2 ways:

  1. Aromatic Repellent

Baltic amber stone contains natural essential oils. The resinous smell of the amber called terpenes ( te:pi:ns), which derives from the friction of the amber with the pets fur, and which ticks do not like are responsible for the tick feeling uncomfortable. By the way, ticks can smell! They do not have a nose like ours but they do have a so-called Haller-organ located on its front legs. This organ helps the tick to perceive the smell of a potential victim. Fleas have a strong sense of smell too, which they use to find accessible food sources.

  1. Electrostatic Repellent

As the amber rubs against the animal’s fur, it generates a mild static electrical charge, which has been discovered as a flea and tick deterrent in dogs and cats. It is completely undetectable to the animal, but gives the tick/flea an electric shock. Amber’s electrical properties were documented by the Ancient Greeks who called it Electron.

Our pet collars are 100% genuine raw Baltic amber, they are absolutely chemical free and therefore cannot cause any allergies.

We also received plenty of feedback that amber reduced anxiety and depression and also repelled ear mites.
